Tumpak Sewu
The most magnificent waterfall ever - if you're heading to East Java, be sure to make this one of your stops! Just bring a spare change of clothes...

Tumpak Sewu was high on our list of things to do in Java (after Kawah Ijen and Mount Bromo), and it did not disappoint. Getting here was the hardest part. It's more than an hours drive outside of the city of Malang, and you'll share the road with lots of big trucks and crazy drivers, so be warned. But trust us, it's definitely worth it.
The entrance fee as of 2025 was Rp 100,000 each, which we thought was slightly steep compared to other attractions around Indonesia, but once you see the waterfall, you'll understand why. There's a viewing platform at the top of the waterfall, as well as a restaurant and a parking area. You then have the option to hike down to see the waterfall from the bottom.
This is where the spare change of clothes comes in handy! The hike down to the waterfall is WET! As well as a spare change of clothes, make sure you bring a waterproof bag to put everything in, as you really do get soaked through.
The other cool thing about Tumpak Sewu is that due to the structure of the rocks being so weak, parts of the waterfall break away every wet season, so it changes in appearance every year.
