Ubud

Although it's touristy - Ubud is a lot of fun and still feels like it's retained some of Bali's authentic charm - just beware of the monkeys!

Ubud was a happy surprise. I was expecting it to be riddled with tourists and stripped of all of its authentic Indonesian charm we were so desperately craving after visiting Kuta, but to our surprise, we loved it!

The monkey forest is definitely the place Ubud is most famous for, and the monkeys here are notorious for being aggressive. They are smart, and if you aren't savvy with your personal belongings, they will be stolen and taken up a tree and only exchanged if you have an adequate amount of bananas on you (something you definitely should NOT have or else you WILL be a victim). Okay, enough with the scaremongering, because I can officially conclude that although I am terrified of monkeys (so much so, we almost didn't visit the forest!) it was such a fun experience.

If you keep your distance from the monkeys and keep your bags zipped and locked up, you'll be absolutely fine. Trust us, many MANY tourists happily waggle their phones around or bring bananas or let the monkeys climb all over them - and these are the people you read about or see online getting jumped. If you don't make it easy for the monkeys or go asking for trouble, you won't get it (hopefully).

Quick anecdote: One of the rules you'll see pasted on the signs in the forest was 'No loud or sudden noises' as it might frighten the monkeys and make them aggressive. So, we're standing in line for the ticket booth running through our monkey mantra: 'no loud noises, no food, no looking them directly in the eye', when in front of us appears a couple with a young son, around two years old. They either had a vendetta against their child or they were just completely oblivious, because that morning they chose to dress him SQUEAKY SHOES. Every step he took, the shoes would let out this god-awful squeak, like a dog toy. The child was running around having the time of his life while this swarm of monkeys frantically ran around trying to decide whether to attack the kid or run up a tree. Huge facepalm, but after witnessing this, we weren't so scared anymore. If anyone was going to be bitten by a monkey, it was that kid.
