Don Det, 1000 Islands

Don Det is one of the many humble islands along the Mekong river in Southern Laos, and home to the largest waterfall in Southeast Asia.

Don Det is the crown jewel of Si Phan Don (The 4,000 Islands), a stunning river archipelago in the far south of Laos where the Mekong River expands to its widest point. Don Det is the ultimate "island life" experience—without the ocean. There are no cars, no paved roads, and the pace of life is dictated entirely by the flow of the river. It's honestly the perfect place to disconnect from the world.

Things to Do:

  • The "Old French Bridge" Walk: Walk or cycle across the historic stone bridge that connects Don Det to its quieter neighbor, Don Khone. It’s a relic of a failed French plan to bypass the Mekong falls with a railway.

  • Visit Khone Phapheng Falls: These are the largest waterfalls by volume in Southeast Asia. They are wide, powerful, and brown, earning them the nickname "The Niagara of the East." The sheer force of the water crashing over the rocks is incredible.

  • Spot the Irrawaddy Dolphins: Okay - maybe not. Humans SUCK and all of these dolphins are now exctinct, but I thought I'd include this on the list to let you know, in case you were planning to visit Don Det specifically to see dolphins. Again, HUMANS SUCK!

  • Cycle the Island Loop: Ride a "vintage" (old and squeaky) bicycle through the rice paddies and small villages. You’ll pass kids playing in the river and local fishermen repairing nets. Beware of snakes though - one slithered right in front of my bike!

  • Li Phi Falls (Tat Somphamit): Located on Don Khone, these falls are a series of jagged, rocky rapids. There is a small beach area nearby and a "beach bar" where you can relax after the short hike to the viewpoint.

  • Tubing on the Mekong: A much mellower version of the Vang Vieng tubing. You can rent a tube and float down the gentle current on the sunset side of the island.

  • Sunset at a Riverside Bar: The western side of the island is lined with wooden decks overhanging the water. Grabbing a Beerlao and watching the sky turn a deep orange over the Cambodian hills is the daily "main event."

  • Kayaking Tours: Join a full-day tour that combines kayaking through the various islets, seeing the waterfalls, and stopping at the dolphin viewing area.
