Vang Vieng

The most epic, adrenaline-inducing adventure capital in Laos! If you come here, be prepared to step out of your comfort zone.

Vang Vieng was once infamous as a wild party town, and even though you can still hear karaoke playing well into the night, it has since transformed into Laos’ premier adventure and wellness destination. Nestled along the Nam Song River and surrounded by some of the most dramatic limestone mountains in the world, it's a memorable landscape to visit.

Things to Do:

  • Hot Air Balloon Ride and paramotoring: This is one of the most affordable places in the world to fly in a hot air balloon or experience paramotoring. Floating silently over the jagged karst peaks as the sun peeks through the mist is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and I couldn't imagine a better place to do it. If you're interested in paramoting - definitely check out adventureticket! We found they are the best company to go with by far - with super high safety standards!

  • The Nam Song River Tubing aka tipsy tubing: The classic Vang Vieng experience. Rent an inner tube and drift down the river while sipping on a Beerlao. Even if partying isn't your scene, this is still so much fun.

  • Climb to Nam Xay Viewpoint: A steep 20–30 minute hike leads you to one of the most Instagram-famous spots in Laos. At the top, there is a wooden platform with an old motorbike bolted to the rocks, offering a 360-degree view of the valley.

  • Swim in the Blue Lagoons: There are several numbered lagoons (1 through 6). Blue Lagoon 3 and Blue Lagoon 5 are usually quieter and offer crystal-clear turquoise water, rope swings, and bamboo rafts.

  • Explore Tham Chang Cave: Accessed via a scenic orange bridge, this is the most famous cave in the area. It was used as a bunker during the 19th century and features impressive stalactites and a cool natural spring at the entrance.

  • Kayaking & Ziplining: For more speed, take a guided kayak tour down the rapids of the Nam Song or fly through the forest canopy on a zipline course near the caves.

  • Cycle to the Rice Fields: Rent a mountain bike and head across the river into the rural villages. The dirt roads wind through emerald fields where you’ll see local farmers and water buffalo against the backdrop of massive grey cliffs.
